The importance of tax revenues from newslot machines since 2005 is a well known fact. In the last month of June alone, AWPs have netted bets of over €1.9 bn, with a total of €10.6 bn in the first six months of 2008.
This is equivalent to over €1.2 bn of tax revenues for the State. Taxes and levies paid by the sector operators have also to be added to this total. Holders of permits for networks connecting machines, as well as the owners of betting concessions and retailers, contribute to the State revenues in a different way, i.e. through payments to the AAMS, the national authority which has been entrusted by law with the overall task of managing the gaming sector since 2007. From the data available from the national Statement of accounts for the 2007 fiscal year, and from the adjustments introduced for 2008, it can be ascertained that the AAMS revenues amounted to €520 million.
Such revenues can be further analysed as follows:
- €88.6 million from permits, retailers and betting shops;
- €152.5 million from the permit for the telematic network;
- €231.8 million as a refund of expenses incurred in the management of lotto, lotteries and bingo;
- €47.1 million from various sources including prize draws.
