In two separate surveys, approximately 3,000 parents have stated they are more concerned about their children's exposure to videogames than alcohol, violence and pornography. The survey was taken recently by What They Play, a website that informs parents about videogames.
Respondents said playing certain videogames was more objectionable than drinking beer or watching pornography. Further, viewing violence was more acceptable than seeing content involving sex and sexuality within games.
One expert cited the belief among some parents that videogames are filled with unknown dangers. Parents participating in focus groups often lamented their inability to use game controls, which made them feel powerless to supervise or limit videogame play. While they want to prevent their children from drinking, to them it is a more familiar risk because of alcohol's long place in the culture.
