Sound Leisure marked a unique anniversary at this year's Preview show. It was exactly 20 years since Alan Black, the company's founder, first showed digital jukebox technology in public - at the very same show.
Since that time, Sound Leisure has been instrumental in developing the technology for pay-to-play and has become a market leader in the supply of digital audio and video jukeboxes throughout the world.
Alan and the team at Sound Leisure were keen to recreate the excitement that surrounded the first ever demonstration of digital music files being downloaded and played through a jukebox-style interface. The event was widely reported in the press at the time and caused quite a stir in the industry - although there were a few sceptics who thought it wouldn't catch on.
A special ‘retro' jukebox was built by Alan Black to look exactly the same as the one he used for his demonstration 20 years ago. He has also invited Kevin Weir from Electrocoin to the Sound Leisure stand at Preview to witness this ‘blast from the past' in just the same way he did two decades previously.
"It's not often I can claim to be at the vanguard of something - but in this instance I really was," says Alan Black. "I believe that the digital jukebox industry has come on so much in 20 years that I would like to mark this occasion at the Preview show."
