Like most American companies, Stern Pinball Inc. of Melrose Park, IL announced plans to streamline its workforce. The restructuring plan will mean downsizing assembly-line staff and reducing design departments and other development areas. The sluggish global economic situation, weaker domestic sales, plus changing values of the U.S. dollar, have created the situation. Stern exports 50% of its new games to overseas markets.
The action has alarmed both pinball player and fan websites. They voice fear about the future of the last remaining pinball manufacturer. Company President Gary Stern has tried to reassure fans that Stern is remaining open for business and is continuing to work hard at developing future games. Specifically, a game based on the "CSI" TV series, and another major property, are in line for development into a pinball game in 2009.
