Viareggio asks to open its own casino...
Published:  03 December, 2008

Despite the economic crisis, draft law proposals are following one after the other in the municipalities asking for a casino to be established in their area. Following the requests by Taormina, where a casino existed before, the Viareggio municipality is also proposing to establish a gaming house with the help of Massimo Baldini (of the "Popolo della Libertà" party), Senator and former mayor, by tabling a special bill. The proposal of the former Mayor of Viareggio is only the latest of the many requests by parliamentarians asking for deregulation.

Having already stated its position many times through specific rulings on the need for a coordinated action on this matter, the Constitutional Court has invited the Government to introduce new laws with the aim of putting some order into the system. At the same time and while assessing the proposal, the undersecretary for tourism, Michela Vittoria Brambilla, said: "I welcome the commitment to reopen the Taormina Casino, as I believe it could be very helpful and beneficial in attracting a more sophisticated tourist." Whilst on the subject, even the City of Milan has asked for the opening of a Casino in view of the Expo Exhibition to be held there in 2015, by enlisting the support of the President of the Campione Casino, Mario Resca, who during an interview has highlighted the fact that with only four Casinos operational there are in fact too few Casinos in Italy, and to have more than one in the same area does not create problems. The key is how to manage them.
