The economic crisis is frightening and to handle it an increasing number of people are calling on their good luck, by deciding to invest some of their resources in betting shops, casinos or by doing the football pools. In Italy, the number of gaming enterprises has grown by 6.4% in one year, and since 2000 to date by 74.7%: these facts are highlighted by data issued by the Research office of the Monza & Brianza Chamber of Commerce.
In the last 12 months gaming enterprises, from the Lotto to gaming houses, have together recorded an increase of 6.4% countrywide.
The significance of this development becomes even clearer when looking at the data relating to the period 2000-2008: in this case the increase is 74.7% and 26.8% for Lombardy alone.
In general the exceptional growth of this sector is at odds with the general trend for businesses: +7.6% in the whole of Italy, +11.5% in the Lombardy Region.
The survey focuses on the developments in Lombardy. The province with the highest gaming activities is Brescia (+150% in eight years), followed by Como (+63.3%) and Bergamo (+38.1%).
In the Milan and Monza-Brianza areas growth has been less overwhelming (14.1% and 12.5% respectively).
