Recommendations from a Pennsylvania Task Force on Violent Interactive Video Games may finally set a precedent for states who continue to enact restrictive legislation on game content similar to that which has already been invalidated by years of federal court decisions.
However, to address potential concerns, the taskforce also recommended that Pennsylvania underwrite consumer education about videogames while also mandating "more objective" research on how game playing affects young people.
It is uncertain whether Pennsylvania legislators will heed the suggestions from the 69-page report. Lawmakers in other states have also received similar recommendations, only to continue in their attempt to pass prohibitions on controversial games for minors.
While politically popular with parents, they remain expensive to defend in court. The amusement industry has challenged every case on First Amendment Freedom of Speech ground, and has continually won in federal court.
