At the beginning of 2008, an operation called "Operation Arcade" was launched by the Servicio de Control de Juegos de Azar (Department for the Control of Games of Chance), and the Unidad Central de Inteligencia Criminal (Central Criminal Intelligence Unit), with the object of successfully collecting all the information relating to crimes committed in amusement arcades, against their owners or their employees in the exercise of their work or on account of same, for its subsequent application to operational plans.
The information generated through this operation has made it possible to pursue, through the auspices of the Cuerpo Nacional de Policía (National Police Body), the criminal activity that is affecting the gaming sector in Spain, and which is currently concerning all the professionals within this sector. With the objective of obtaining the best possible results a monitoring commission was created by the Unidades Policiales de la Comisaría General de Policía Judicial (Police Units of the General Commissariat of Judicial Police) and representatives of the main associations belonging to the sector. This commission meets on a quarterly basis in the Autonomous Region where the incidence of this type of crime has been highest. The fourth meeting of the Monitoring Commission took place on 12th February. Based on the information collected by the various Territorial Intelligence Units, a report has been produced that gathers together the criminal data resulting from this operation over the past year which saw 110 arrests in Spain, 50 of them in the last quarter of the year, resulting in a reduction in these crimes of 2.5 percent compared to the previous quarter.
