Stan McKenna, managing director of Excel Leisure Products, is one of pool’s most respected individuals. He regards pool tables as a traditional product and thinks operators tend to buy mahogany-coloured tables fitted with green cloth because they are a safe purchase and can be relocated to alternative sites if required.
New locations or refurbished sites, however, often require more fashionable tables such as the high-gloss laminate models that Excel produces under the Silver, Laser and Galaxy names. Different coloured cloths such as those produced in the Milliken Artscape range (pictured on previous page) tended to be used on those tables, said McKenna.
He added that beech finish came second in popularity to mahogany laminate tables, with the high-gloss laminate finish used on more expensive tables. Blue, red, burgundy, purple and occasionally black were often used on modern tables.
