Antoja slams Italian law
Published:  01 December, 2006

Eduardo Antoja, President of Euromat, the European trade body, criticised the thinking behind the new Italian law for AWP machines during a speech at the opening meeting of the Enada show in Rome, saying it would lead to the collapse of the industry.

“Here we have the wrong economic model,” explained Antoja.”The problem is that the model is based on the idea that we offer a game, not entertainment. Taxation is even paid on the installation of the machine, not on the takings. It is only natural that any government should be keen to regulate business activities that are so interesting from a revenue point of view, but it should not limit its assessment on the basis of this factor alone.”

He continued, “In addition, a major issue of recognition in law exists. Although the functions and the status of the regulatory authorities, of licensed dealers and of players are perfectly clear, the status of the operator is not identified. The present system must be modified very soon to avoid complete collapse. The first point of action should be a review of the tax system, and then a move on to the issue of recognition in law. If these actions are not taken in the interest of all parties concerned, one can only imagine the consequences.”
