Last month saw the official creation of Patrojoc, the employers’ association for private gaming in Catalonia. It has its own statutes and will be presided over by Juan Lao Hernández, who is also Chairman of the Conei Group.
The board of directors, whose members are some of the most notable personalities in the sector, represents the four main sub-sectors of private gaming – Eugeni Balcells (Mediterráne de Azar) representing the amusement arcade sector, Joaquín Gomis (CODERE) representing slot machines, Manuel Lao Gorina (CIRSA) representing bingo halls and Jaume Sanahuja (MGA) for casinos. All of them are businessmen and professionals, with vast experience and long careers in a sector that is pleading for the defence of private-gaming interests. The Catalan gaming industry thus becomes part of the organisational structure of Fomento del Trabajo Nacional (Promotion of National Work), the association of businessmen for that region integrated into CEOE, the large Spanish employers’ association that welcomed the members of COFAR, the Spanish Confederation of Manufacturers and Amusement Companies, to its conference in Madrid last spring.
