Last month over 150,000 businesses and organisations throughout Wales were mailed with information about the smoking ban, which is due to take effect in Wales on April 2 next year.
The mailshot, issued by the Welsh Assembly Government, will alert businesses to the implications of the new legislation. More information on the smoking ban in Wales is included on the wesite – www.smokingbanwales.co.uk – which offers further information and a facility for businesses across Wales to sign up for regular updates.
Workers in the hospitality industry, a sector traditionally associated with smoking and smoky atmospheres, should be amongst the key beneficiaries of this new legislation. Wales is not alone in taking this bold move. In March 2004 the Republic of Ireland became the first country to ban smoking in indoor workplaces, followed by Norway in June 2004 and New Zealand in December 2004. Scotland's smoking ban came into effect in March 2005. Smoke-free legislation has also been passed in a number of US, Canadian and Australian states.
