Slovenia officially joined the euro zone on 1 January 2007. Euro notes and coins have been circulating since then and a period of two weeks has been set for double circulation of tolars and euros. Slovenia is the first of the countries which joined the EU in 2004 to adopt the Single Currency.
The European Commission announced that the number of banknotes in circulation within the euro zone had almost tripled in the five years since it was introduced. The new year sees the launch of the German Presidency of the Council, which has generated a huge amount of expectation. In an attempt to lend continuity to the twice-yearly rotation of the Presidency, the Council requested in June 2002 that consecutive Presidencies work together on a programme. The Council subsequently incorporated cooperation among three consecutive Presidencies over a period of 18 months into its Rules of Procedure. Hence Germany, Portugal and Slovenia will work closely to ensure a smooth transition.
