The Enforcement Division of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs raided the offices of Cosmic Hitec in Penang, Malaysia on December 19 and seized 30 copies of Merit’s Force products. The seized products include complete games, motherboards and hard drives, according to Robert Fay, Director of Government Relations.
“We have been conducting an investigation into the illegal importing, distributing and operating of Merit copies by Cosmic for two months,” stated Fay. The action was based on violations of Merit’s copyrights. Fay added that numerous records and other materials were also seized. “The evidence seized will be the basis for a criminal action against the company and its owners,” Fay further stated. “This is our first action in Malaysia but additional actions are anticipated,” Fay said. “Individuals who copy, distribute and operate Merit copies should be aware that Merit Industries is serious about protecting their intellectual property rights, and will take aggressive actions worldwide to eliminate Merit copies in the market place,” added Fay. The successful action in Malaysia follows similar actions in China, Singapore, Hong Kong and South Africa. “We won’t stop until we eliminate copies of our products and more raids will be taking place shortly in other countries.” We are concentrating heavily on China but we will continue to take actions in countries that import Merit copies.”
