FThe defective coins escaped detection and are in circulation, which has delighted coin collectors. The first design was of George Washington, America’s first president, and will run past 2016. There edges were struck without their "edge incused" (punched) inscriptions that include the national mottoes “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust”. It is omitted the year and mintmark. A novel feature of the Presidential Series is the placement of these inscriptions on the rim of the coin rather than its obverse or reverse. The Associated Press has reported that the first group of faulty coins reached $600 on eBay, but the market saturation reduced the price to $50. Mint officials cannot determine how many of the more than 300 million of the new Washington coins manufactured to date are flawed.
