The Japanese government plans to legalise casino gambling next year and is currently drafting the legislation. Seiko Noda of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party has said that they hoped to pass the bill by June 2008.
Japanese game developer Konami reported sales totaling $2.3 billion yen for the fiscal year ending March, up from $2.15 billion in the previous year. Operating income rose to $230 million, an increase of $214 million on the same period last year. Publishing & Broadcasting's James Packer has completed the sale for a further 25 per cent stake in his Nine television network and magazine publisher to buyout firm CVC Asia Pacific for $427 million. A report from the company said that the sale would fund his push into global gaming, where he has led $1.5 billion of investments since October 2006. According to Bloomberg, sales at the company's casino division had risen an average of 20 per cent a year for the past two years, more than double the rate of the media unit. HDSNR, an Israeli e-commerce company is set to offer online gambling services according to reports in leading Hebrew newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth. The company, headed by Nino Ransenberg and Daniel Scalosub, is reportedly expanding its current business portfolio, which includes operating US green card lottery application services over the Internet, to market online poker games; with blackjack and roulette websites being introduced at a later date.
