This year’s £50,000 Pub Pool Challenge, which was held for the first time last year and which closed with an exciting live TV coverage finals evening on Sky Sports, has had to be cancelled because of lack of support.
The single prize-one frame competition drew its support mainly from pub and club sites who paid an entry fee for their players to take part. Only a single frame was played which gave all players, whether amateur or professional, a chance to progress. Area qualifying tournaments preceded the televised finals but this year the popularity of last year’s event had waned and insufficient support was not forthcoming. Sadly this shows again the lack of interest among many pub landlords and players when called upon to make a comparatively small contribution to pool events designed to popularise the game at pub, club and, through the televised finals, national levels. Last year a losing pool player saw his opponent win £50,000. This year pool itself is the loser without a winner.
