Sometimes it feels as though we work in a very small industry along the lines of a large, dysfunctional family. We can be fiercely competitive when it comes to business but, when push comes to shove and someone is in trouble, it is impressive how quickly people rally round.

Last month Quentin Stott from Reflex Gaming and his close friend Kevin Temple from Deith Leisure, both based in the UK, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise money for Meningitis UK. They took on this challenge in memory of Dylan Stott – son of Quent and his wife Surjit, who also has a background in this industry. Thanks to donations made largely by other companies involved in coin-op, the trek raised over £35,000 in sponsorship. People contributed in a number of different ways: all the trade publications gave over free pages to advertise the trek, Roy and June Howell stopped drinking alcohol for a month and people, some of whom Quent and Surj didn’t even know that well, handed over cheques for huge amounts of money.

Once in a while it is important to appreciate the people who we deal with on a daily basis, who make our working days more enjoyable. For me, one such person is our pool correspondent John Coates, who has been involved in this industry longer than he might like me to say. He knows all there is to know about cue sports and is a real gentleman of the old school. Unfortunately, we can’t run his column this month as John has been taken ill and is in hospital. I am sure you all join me to wish him a speedy recovery.
