Leaders in tax collection
Published:  20 October, 2008

Catalonia collected 351.48 million euros in taxes on gaming in 2007, 4.85% more than the previous year, when it obtained 335.2 million, according to data from a study carried out by the professional business magazine for private gaming in Spain, Joc Privat. The collection in Catalonia in 2007 reached 17.5% of the state total. Once again Catalonia leads the way in the collection of taxes coming from private gaming in Spain, followed by the Madrid Autonomous Region (328.10 million), Andalusia (288.12 million) and the Canary Islands (111.54 million).

The collection in Catalonia in 2007 amounted to 17.5% of the state total, which passed the 2,000 million euro barrier for the first time, with 2,007.05 million. The source of the taxes collected has seen marked variations in comparison to 2006. In particular, the income from taxes on bingo halls was reduced by six million euros, to 148.15 million, and the income from taxes on casinos dropped by almost two million, to a total of 32 million.

The study reflects a "drop" in automatic collections coming from bingo halls and a "significant reduction" in that coming from casinos, whilst at the same time it highlights the significant increase in the collection from machines of types B and C, which in the case of Catalonia increased by 20 million from 2006 to 2007, to 168.97 million. This increase was a "determinant" in compensating for the reduced collections from bingo and resulted in a total collection for the Administrative Region in 2007 in excess of that in 2006, states the text, which adds that the binjocs machines in bingo halls and arcades are not included in the study because their system of taxes has an impact on the accounts of the Entidad Autónoma de Juegos y Apuestas (Eaja) - the Autonomous Region's Organisation for Gaming and Bets. In the smallest economic sections, the income from taxes coming from greyhound racing and pelota increased from -215,341 euros in 2006 to 2.06 million in 2007, whereas the income from raffles, tombolas and lotteries dropped from 252,052 euros to 246,903.
