Gran Scala, a long way to go
Published:  19 May, 2009

A law for gaming in the autonomous region of Aragón. This it is the only requirement that is lacking before the province of Huesca can become the great Casino of Spain. According to sources close to Gran Scala, there is only one more obstacle to be overcome : the Aragonese law, which has to regulate gaming and which must allow a concentration of casinos as proposed by ILD. In fact, Spyland, Spaceport, Sport Market, Realities and Novomatic are waiting for the legal viability of the project to be confirmed.

Since it started to purchase land in February the promoter has reserved more than 70% of the space intended for the first phase. "The Gran Scala project, the largest leisure and amusement park in Europe, will be complete and fully operational in 2022, employing 65,000 people directly and 135,000 indirectly", the promoters assure us. Nevertheless not everything is plain sailing for this large project.

The defender of the Spanish Town, Enrique Múgica, will carry out a study on the macro-project after receiving a request to do this from the civic platform ‘Stop Gran Scala Baix Cinca' informing and denouncing, among other things, the attitude adopted by the Government of Aragón in relation to the gaming and leisure macro-project with institutional support reflected in the signature of the protocol with ILD and the statements in the communications media. The ecological organization complains of a lack of elaboration of a study into the impact of the project at all levels (social, political, demographic, territorial, town-planning, environmental, cultural, sanitary, etc.), as well as into the change of laws for private interests, and the vindication of gaming, clearly contradicting the spirit of the law on gaming approved by its own Autonomous Executive with the aim of preventing compulsive gambling.
