Bad news for operators with equipment in restaurants and food service operations. NPD Group, a research firm, has reported that young adults- ages 18 to 24- have restricted their restaurant visits. This group represents the most lucrative restaurant demographic. As parents seek ways to save money, more are leaving their children home. Children's parties also declined by 3%.
NPD has tracked consumer purchasing and consumption patterns at commercial restaurants for more than 30 years since 1975. The data reveals that in 2008, restaurant visits by young adults decreased from 254 per capita in 2007 to 233 in 2008.
Unfortunately for amusement operators, the Baby Boomers- ages 50 to 64- is the one group with increased visits to restaurants over the past year. The number of per capita visits by this age group rose from 204 in 2007 to 209 in 2008. However, compared to younger customers, this group is not typically playing in the arcades, taverns or restaurants on a regular basis.
