The Irish Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Michael McDowell has announced his intention to regulate the casino sector in Ireland, a move that has met with widespread support from privatemembers gaming clubs across the country.
Minister McDowell had threatened the sector with closure earlier this year but, on reflection and consultation with government colleagues, will now establish a working group whose remit would be to consider the possibilities for a legislative basis for the strict regulation of casinostyle operations within the state, bringing Ireland into line with the 23 EU member states that already have a regulated casino sector in operation.
The Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland (GLAI) applauds this move by the Minister and his Cabinet colleagues, which properly reflects modern times and current demand in leisure activities.
“We believe that this decision is very wise and extrovert,” enthused GLAI Chairman David Hall. “Regulation of the sector will mean hundreds of jobs will be kept and more created; the potential for revenue earnings will be maximised; and consumers will ultimately get to enjoy the gamut of gambling services which are clearly in demand, but within a controlled and regulated environment which affords them the consumer protection they deserve. It also takes advantage of the proven best practice in the successfully regulated and flourishing casino sectors within the majority of our EU neighbours.
“We look forward to working with the Minister and his colleagues on the format this regulation will take, ensuring that experience is drawn from other jurisdictions and that due consideration is taken of both existing demand for casinos and the checks and balances required to ensure the development of a responsible casino sector,” he continued.
