A new court ruling has delayed an earlier court's ruling in Ohio. For a brief period, operators were permitted to award noncash prizes valued above $10 for skill games. Following the new decision, operators are once again restricted to giving prizes worth $10 or less.
The legal process started in 2007. Ohio lawmakers passed a new regulation, limiting prizes on games of skill to noncash items worth $10 or less. A court challenge was then struck down this past July. Subsequently, skill game operators began awarding merchandise prizes or vouchers worth more than a $10 for a single winning play.
However, state officials immediately appealed the case, hoping the Ohio Supreme Court would uphold the $10 limit. During the time it would take for the high court to decide if it would take the case, the state's attorney general has filed a motion to block the July 16 ruling from taking effect. The recent ruling affirmed that effort.
