Sports betting in August recorded the highest (98.48%) monthly pay-out (i.e. the proportion of takings given back to players as prizes) in 2009. These are the most significant data arising from an analysis of the total bets recorded by the Autonomous Administration of State Monopolies.
Bets placed during August amounted to €266,693,870, a 12.24% increase over the same month of the previous year. Therefore, in the period January - August 2009 total bets have recorded an 8.03 % rise.
The number of tickets issued during August by the national tote amounted to 28,830,433, but the average bet is slightly lower (€9.25) because of the reduction of the minimum amount playable, down from €3 to €2. The average win is €180.48.
The average tax taken was 4.28 %. Therefore net proceeds by licensed dealers during August are in the red by €7,364,006.63.
Total bets placed with dealers licensed for sports betting (network pre Bersani) reached €123,519,949; those placed with public betting dealers (network post Bersani) reached €143,173,921.
During August a lot of space has been given in the media to the programme schedules of minor sporting activities, such as rowing, canoeing, athletics, target shooting, archery etc., in an effort to boost awareness of all sports. Unfortunately for some sports no takings have been recorded because operators have not offered odds to the players.
Sporting events offered during the eight months of the year totalled 4891 (i.e. on average over 157 per day). Bets were accepted on 3765 events.
Right from the start, the top Italian football Championship swept the board, securing the ten highest spots in terms of takings.
During August, tournaments in North America have dominated tennis. Two of the first 10 games have seen Flavia Pennetta playing a leading role. She is now among the top ten players in the WTA ranking.
Of some interest are the bets placed on the draw for the first category prize of SuperEnalotto.
Football is obviously the sport attracting the most attention, with 93.65% of bets, while tennis has attracted bets totalling 3.26%. All other sports have percentages below 1%.
As always, one must remember that the figures reviewed above are generally subject to continuous variations depending on the time of closure and the price of the betting tickets.
Net amounts received for "live" betting were €11,677,075.02, an increase of over €3mn in comparison with August 2008.
Takings over the physical network were 70.14% of the total.
During August, 386,174 betting contracts were recorded, for a total of 8,241,480 tickets.
