A year after the Pennsylvania’s Gaming Control Board made $5 million available to local law enforcement for targeting gray-area pokers, many police and prosecutors across the state are returning the money and saying “thanks, but no thanks.”
Last year the board paid out $3.5 million in grants for poker crackdowns, but more than $600,000 has been returned. This year, many local officials are not requesting the special enforcement funds. According to some district attorneys and state lawmakers, law enforcement has lost interest in prosecuting lawful citizens who may be offering harmless, if technically illegal entertainment.
