Takings from sports betting reached almost 4 billion euro in 2009. In fact, in total, bets worth 3,989 million euro were placed, a 2.1% increase on the 3,908 million collected from the sector in 2008. An increase – explains Agicos – that is very much reduced when one considers that in 2008 sports betting showed an increase of 50% over the 2,591 million placed in 2007. On-line betting has done decidedly better, with takings of 1207.6 million, representing an increase of 12.9% over the 1069,7 million collected in 2008. Betting on the Internet in 2009 has accounted for 30.3% of the total amount collected.
Once again the Campania region is the one with the highest takings (542 million euro) in the fixed amount sports betting market in 2009. Next was Lazio (361.8) followed by Lombardy (318.5). It should be noted that these 3 regions together accounted for more than 30% of the total bets placed in Italy in the past year. Takings were also good in Puglia (278.5 million euro) and in Sicily (254.7). Takings of under 10 million euro were recorded for Molise (8.4) and Valle d’Aosta (2.4).
The rankings change radically if the regional data for 2009 are compared with those for 2008. The two regions that have seen the largest percentage growth in fixed amount sports betting takings are Sardinia and Friuli Venice Giulia with a 14.9% and a 14.1% increase, respectively. Doing well also are Liguria, Veneto and Marche. There were 10 regions, therefore half the total, where takings increased. Piemonte was stable (- 0.2%) whilst in the leading region for collections, namely Campania, takings fell by 7.4%. The decrease was greater in Molise (- 15.8%).
That the South is the realm of fixed amount sports betting is a fact that is clearly confirmed by the data for takings in 2009. Indeed in the South bets were placed amounting to 1,196.3 million euro, i.e. 43.1% of the total for the sector (obviously not including on-line bets). In the North the sector has recorded takings of 876.9 million (31.5%), and in the Centre 708.2 (25.4%). Soccer matches fill the top 10 places for the most bets placed in 2009. Heading the list was the Champions League Final between Barcelona and Manchester United that collected 8.4 million euro alone.
Among the top ten events are 5 matches played in the UEFA competition. The game with the most bets (4.5 million euro) in the current championship was that between Inter and Rome on 8th November last year. The most balanced, emotional and longest final in the history of Wimbledon, which ended with a sixth title for Roger Federer by beating a fierce Andy Roddick after 4 hours and 16 minutes, was the non-soccer event on which the most money was bet in 2009.
