The Secretary General of the Department of the Interior of the Catalan Government, Joan Boada, and the person responsible for Gaming, Mercè Claramunt, have presented the results of an initial study into the practice of Gaming in Catalonia which is based on the results of a survey.
According to Joan Boada “the results of this survey actually offer an in-depth analysis of the customs and habits in the practice of games of chance” emphasizing that “it is the first time that a study has been undertaken in Catalonia to determine the level of visibility, knowledge and practice of gaming“. The Study has been conducted using the results of a telephone survey of 2,380 people throughout Catalonia in an endeavour to analyse the customs and habits of those who play games of chance. In the study the practice of the 21 most important types of gaming in Catalonia was analysed, these included Lotería y Apuestas del Estado (LAE), Loterías de Cataluña, ONCE, amusement machines, bingo halls, casinos, family gambling, the Internet and other forms of gaming. The result shows that the population are familiar with most types of games of chance and in particular the State Lotteries such as the Christmas Gordo (98%) and the National Lottery (97%). As regards private gaming the conclusions show 9% gamble within the family, 6% in Bingo halls, 5% on amusement machines and 3% in casinos. Viewed from another point of view, the perception and opinion of the population questioned on the practice of games of chance in the society demonstrate that 69% believe that gaming, practiced in moderation, is neither better nor worse than any other activity. Thanks to this study, the Department responsible for Gaming in Catalonia has discovered new methods of working and has the possibility of improving its current operations.
