Online payment - clarity needed
Published:  03 July, 2010

During the technical days organized by the iiR company in Madrid, the predominance of methods of payment for on-line gaming activities was analysed in the light of the current financial scenario. What became apparent was the necessity to adopt a new community legal framework that would harmonise and supplement the fragmented national regulations relating to payment services, and solve the problems of inefficiency and legal insecurity arising from earlier differing regulations.

In compliance with the Law that came into effect in May covering payment services and payment organisations, there is a requirement to guarantee that payments made within the European Union can be made with the same facility, effectiveness and security as national payments. According to Patrick Becker, from the Teleplay company, one disadvantage of the use of alternative methods of payment, is the high cost in comparison with traditional methods. The main reason is the high cost of collection associated with such methods. However one great advantage of these methods is the relatively higher income. For his part, Daniel Ledesma of Casino Gran Madrid, commented in his presentation that the client is looking for confidence and security. The selection of payment methods is critical in the success of any online business: it determines the result and is key both to the positioning and the quality of the perceived service. The untraditional methods of payment are still very little used in Spain but they are the key to the differentiation. The outstanding conclusion drawn from these technical days was the possibility of interesting new business options arising from these payment methods since, as well as their function as a payment tool for the user, there are the common objectives of attracting and retaining new clients for the payment system operators and the users of the system alike.
