By an almost two-to-one margin in April, the Florida House approved a proposed 20-year gambling compact with the Seminole tribe. The state Senate passed the compact by a three-to-one vote. It should go through official measures smoothly since Florida Governor Charlie Crist strongly supports it and the U.S. Interior Department, which regulates Native American gaming, should also give its okay.
Once effective, the Seminoles will have an exclusive five-year exclusive right to operate slot machines and blackjack tables in Florida. Street operator-owned video lottery machines (VLT) were not legalized by the deal. Tribal officials claimed some exclusivity in the gambling market is necessary to protect their investment.
Estimates of $1.3 billion in tax revenues between 2011 and 2015 are projected. When the monopoly ends in 2016, Las Vegas and European casinos may compete against the Seminoles with their own slots and blackjack locations.
