The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) has committed to hold its annual IAAPA Attractions Expo at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) in Orlando, Florida until 2019.
The new agreement adds five years to the association’s original deal with the OCCC (pictured), and means the scheduled 2011 Las Vegas expo is cancelled.
IAAPA originally planned to split its expos between Florida and Las Vegas, but six factors drove the decision to stay in the Sunshine State. These included attendee preference, the OCCC’s superior facilities, Orlando’s proximity to renowned major theme parks and attractions, reduced costs with the ten-year agreement, and affordable access for international visitors.
The Las Vegas convention industry has suffered since 2009, losing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of business. The tough situation is blamed on the economy, a reduced airline schedule and comments from President Barack Obama in 2009, when he cautioned against going to Las Vegas on “the taxpayers’ dime”.
