Madrid's bingo halls say they need to move from cards to electronic games in order to survive.
“If the bingo sector of Madrid does not have the possibility to introduce new areas of business to innovate and expand the range of its entertainment offers, it will close and there will be no possibility of continuing,” Jose Luis Merino, general secretary of the Asociación de Empresarios de Juegos Autorizados (ASEJU), was quoted as saying.
ASEJU, along with the Organización Empresaral Madrileña de Establecimientos del Juego (OMEGA), represents the bingo halls.
The 59 establishments in the Spanish capital are said to account for 2500 jobs directly and a similar number indirectly, as well as contributing €300m each year to the city's finances.
Besides urging Madrid's government to give them permits for electronic bingo, the halls also want a reform of taxation on their gross revenue – currently just over 61 percent – and to increase payouts to 70 percent of takings. They say regulators should look to Italy for a workable model.
