While spending cuts dominate Britain's political conversation and the agenda of many private companies, games creator Project has urged manufacturers to continue investing in research and development.
The firm – whose products include video poker and blackjack, slots, and lottery systems – says it is ring-fencing its R&D spending in the expectation that the coalition government will create a more friendly regulatory environment for gaming businesses, and thus encourage demand for its machines.
“When you find yourself in the eye of the perfect storm that is UK gaming machine manufacturing at the moment, the initial response is to batten down the hatches. However, manufacturing relies on a continuous process of bringing new ideas to market, testing them, refining them and frequently moving on to fresh gaming concepts and applications.
"Quite simply, as a manufacturer, if you stop developing you will ultimately lose the game,” managing director Tony Boulton was quoted as saying.
