Tourist numbers up
Published:  11 November, 2010

Foreign tourism was up in Spain for the fifth month running in September, growing by 4.2 percent compared with the same month a year ago, to reach 5.2m.

This continuing growth in visitors is reinforcing confidence that Spain’s tourist industry has put behind it the slide of 2008-9 – the first in a decade. In a disastrous 2009, numbers coming to the country slumped by 8.7 percent on the previous year and Spain lost its position as the world’s second-most-visited nation, to the U.S.

Over the first nine months of 2009, however, there has been 0.8 percent growth compared with the same period in 2009.

A big contributor to September’s success was the 11.4 percent increase in visitors from Germany, topping 1m during the month. Britain’s contribution fell slightly but remained close to 1.5m.

Tourism makes up about a tenth of Spain’s economy, but it has been losing visitors to more recently emerging destinations such as Turkey and Egypt.

However, investment in the sector continues. For example, Paramount Pictures is planning a new theme park at Condado de Alhama in Murcia, near Spain’s southeast coast, to directly rival Disneyland Paris.

The 3.5m square metre site is expected to attract 3m tourists a year and provide 15,000 hotel beds. It was formerly owned by Polaris World, the developer of golf-based resorts.
