Arcade shooting game Terminator Salvation has sold into 25 countries since its European launch in January, according to maker Namco Bandai. But it is gameplay – rather than the movie association – that is driving its popularity, the firm’s UK arm says.
“Licences on their own are window dressing, but when a licence such as the Terminator sci-fi franchise is linked to a compelling game which has powerful play credentials it has a massive impact on the cash box, generating high earnings over a long-term period,” said John Brennan, commercial director at Namco Europe’s UK operation Brent Sales.
As an example, Brennan’s company is citing the first European installation at Number Ten Bowling in Romford, where it is still the best-performing video game after nearly a year.
“Licensed products win the all-important battle for the first leisure coin, after that it’s all about the game and earning repeat custom by delivering out-of-home play experiences. In the case of Terminator Salvation, the heavy-duty recoiling rifles and clip-action reload, among a host of other features, have helped deliver a depth of realism unparalleled in any arcade shooter and enable the game to translate across cultures and consistently attract players,” argued Brennan.
Brent Sales is now distributing a version with twin 32-inch screens as well as the 42-inch model released earlier in the year. A unit with a 100-inch projected display is also imminent.
