Spain’s online gamblers are betting nearly twice as much as they believe, according to new research.
Academics working in the Institute for Policy and Governance at the Carlos III university in Madrid found that the typical player spent nearly €40 a month but thought they had only spent €22.
“They think that they are browsing the Net, going into pages of this type and gambling, believing that they are still browsing. On the other hand, in the case of conventional gambling, if you are going to make a bet on football scores, playing instant lottery, buying a lottery ticket, or taking part in a bingo game, you are more aware that you are gambling,” said Jose Ignacio Cases, who co-ordinated the research.
Based on 1000 consumer interviews, it showed that more than 90 percent of Spaniards aged between 18 and 75 have gambled at least once, and that just under half gamble regularly.
Gambling occurs across all demographic segments, they found, but is more common among men, with 22-to-55-year-old males particularly likely to indulge. Contrary to some popular perceptions, gamblers are most likely to be in “medium to high social positions”, the researchers concluded.
They hope their study will prompt more academic research into Spanish gaming.
