While one politician from Piedmont, Alberto Cirio, is proposing to open two new casinos in the region, the president of the regional council, Valerio Cattaneo, has tabled a law proposing to limit gambling in this part of northeastern Italy.
He has tabled a bill at Palazzo Lascaris – the seat of the Piedmont Regional Council in Turin, pictured – signed by him and by 34 other councillors from all political parties, asking for parliament to intervene to limit gambling.
Cattaneo explains: “It is regrettable that in the last few years we have been witnessing a number of measures designed to promote and legalise gambling. The economic activities generated in this way make up a healthy industry often capable of causing an actual illness in the individuals affected, with grave consequences for their family and their standing in the community.
“It has to be borne in mind that among inveterate gamblers, three in four ask for loans they are later unable to repay, and that 65 percent of players are attracted by slot machines, creating a state of dependency because of the low cost of participation. This condition is unfortunately widespread. I have been able to see at first hand how many simple and hard-working people allow themselves to be robbed by these devices.”
The bill, whose objective is to introduce a ban on the installation and operation of slot machines within public premises, aims to put a check on the organised criminals who take the majority of slot revenues in Italy, and to contain the dependency often found in people addicted to this activity.
