Although the British sometimes regard them as a typically dismal national creation, motorway services are common, albeit usually smaller, across the rest of Europe. Indeed, they are often found more closely spaced than in the UK, where the government’s recommended distance between locations is about 30 miles.

And they commonly offer amusements too, including systems like LAI Games’ Stacker prize game – distributed in much of Europe by Funworld – as well as slots.

But there is a significant difference in their business models. In many countries, the government or highways authority operates the site as a whole and takes responsibility for providing the free facilities, such as toilets. It then sublets parts of the complex to fuel, retail and food providers.

In Ireland, however, the British model is followed. Applegreen is the market leader there, with 32 in the republic as well as a couple in Northern Ireland and three in Britain. Most of them are not strictly speaking motorway service areas, as the country has very little true motorway; Applegreen’s first facility actually on an Irish motorway recently opened at Lusk, near Dublin.
