The latest edition of ProGameShow, the Italian professional gaming and automatic amusement exhibition, was hosted this year for the first time by the Milan Convention Centre. It is an ambitious wager at a difficult time for the Italian economy and for the industry in general.
Riccardo Chionna, president of ACMI, the association of Italian manufacturers of amusement machines, opened the event with a message loaded with optimism: “The sector is living through a difficult time, a phase characterised on the one hand by the effects of a crisis affecting every industrial and manufacturing sector and on the other by the effects of the coming into force of the amendments to the legislation introduced by the Stability Law.”
These reasons make participation all the more important in an event that strives to be a cause of pride for the many people who feel themselves part of the amusement machine sector. “Especially so this year as it is being held in Milan, the symbolic city of Italian industry and finance, at just that time of the year that coincides with the end of the old year, a time to reflect, and to begin to think about the new year,” said Chionna.
However, reasons for concern are certainly not lacking and it would be absurd not to register the notes of pessimism observed in the comments and views of many of the operators present at the event.
It is seven years since NewSlots were launched onto the market and one year since the official recognition of video lottery terminals (VLTs), yet it is still not possible to determine certain facts about the relationship between the two types of gaming – or, with the entrance of the more than 50,000 VLTs already authorised, the possible downturn in the market for amusement machines with prizes, the true core business of the Italian manufacturing companies.
