Public disaffection with Italy’s lotteries is continuing, and that is why the Amministrazione dei Monopoli di Stato (AAMS – the state’s monopolies administration) has decided that for 2011 there will be just one lottery, the Lotteria Italia.
A report presented by the Amministrazione on national lotteries states that the decision to have a single lottery has been taken for several reasons, including:
• The exponential increase in gaming offers, especially with the prospect of instant wins and players’ consequent disaffection with the lottery.
• The absence of any significant gains from local lotteries for the treasury or organisers.
• Operating difficulties resulting from direct management of the lotteries. The Lotteria Italia 2010 was not managed through a licensee, but directly by the AAMS using services provided by the National Lottery Consortium.
“This is why,” says the report, “in order to launch a product which, it is believed, may still have the potential for recovery, it is necessary to make a hard decision, to establish a single lottery, drawn, as usual, in conjunction with some broadcast television and/or radio event or project.”
