New government can make all the difference, as Alabama’s operators have discovered. Within a day of being sworn in, Alabama’s new Republican governor Robert Bentley dismantled the widely disliked Governor’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling.
Bentley campaigned on that promise and a voter referendum. Rather than the courts or politicians making the decisions, Alabama voters would choose which, if any, forms of gambling should be legalised within the state.
Former governor Bob Riley, Bentley’s immediate predecessor, had initiated the task force in 2009-10, creating controversial headlines and reactions. The group aimed to shut down electronic bingo operations, often conducting pre-dawn raids with armed police.
Bentley’s first executive order disbanded the task force. All current cases rest with Luther Strange, the state’s new attorney general. Strange has acknowledged that casino defendants in pending cases may still face possible prosecution. Bentley will not push a citizen vote on electronic bingo, but wants to wait and hear what the courts decide.
