Carry on staycationing

Britons are likely to carry on taking their holidays within the UK even when the economic climate improves, according to new research from BDRC Continental.

In its annual survey of holidaying plans, BDRC found that 48 percent of British consumers are considering remaining in the UK for a “staycation” this year, compared with 39 percent in 2010 and 29 percent in 2009.

The firm suggests that lower costs compared to travelling abroad are not the only factor. Holidaymakers, impressed by the quality of the tourism experience available in Britain, will continue to take some vacations locally, it predicts.

“The UK holiday revival has been founded on a conscious decision to stay, based on positive experiences and improved service, rather than an inability to afford to travel abroad. This gives cause for optimism that this can be sustained well into the future, if the sector continues to innovate and meet holidaymakers’ expectations,” Steve Mills, director of BDRC Continental, was quoted as saying.
