Beer sales in British pubs are down nearly 40 percent from their heyday a decade ago, according to the GMB union.
It argues that the 38.9 decrease from 2002’s peak reflects pub closures caused by property companies setting rents too high.
The British Beer and Pub Association says that 1300 pubs closed across Britain during 2010, leading to 13,000 job losses and knock-on effects on sectors such as gaming.
Meanwhile, Luminar – the country’s biggest nightclub firm and owner of brands such as Oceana and Liquid – has reported plummeting like-for-like sales in the year ending 26 February. They fell 18.6 percent, it says, a blow that some have blamed on unemployment among the nightclubs’ young patrons.
