Exactly two years after the tragic earthquake that destroyed the wonderful city of L’Aquila and a great many towns in the neighbourhood, the gaming sector has been able to generate the income predicted by the Abruzzo decree.
The decree allocated €8.5bn in total to the Abruzzo region, of which €1.5bn at least would come from gaming, split into three equal parts of €500m per annum.
Win for Life, 10eLotto, the Gratta Quiz scratch-and-win cards and the video lottery terminals (VLTs) have made it possible to exceed the €1bn that it was originally predicted would be raised by now.
By the end of 2010, money raised through gaming for reconstruction after the earthquake had reached €1.2bn. And further money should come in 2011 with the start of other types of gaming: cash games and online casinos, betting exchanges and lotteries for consumers.
However, the greatest contribution for the reconstruction of the Abruzzo region, as far as the gaming sector is concerned, comes from the introduction of VLTs, the new gaming machines with higher prizes and €500,000 jackpots. It is followed by the contribution from Win for Life, which has allocated 23 percent of its revenue (equivalent to €260m) to this cause.
