The February consumer index published by Confcommercio shows a drastic reduction in the volume of goods purchased by families and an increase in expenditure on services.
Compared to February 2010, demand for recreational goods and services shows a rise of 1.4 percent, the major contributing factor being the continuing rising trend in expenditure on gaming, lotteries and betting.
But there is a growing feeling of uncertainty about the future. The economic environment continues to be characterised by a rather slow economic recovery with ups and downs, with a limiting effect on the labour market, and the consequence is a situation that is generating lots of uncertainty in the short and medium term for the Italian economy, affecting the economic behaviour of family units.
This situation is confirmed by the worsening level of confidence recorded in March by families, who feel that difficulties will continue in the next few months. The level of confidence among companies also confirms the same trend of uncertainty.
