Asian, Hispanic populations soar
Published:  13 May, 2011

New data released by the U.S. Census Bureau in late March reveals trends that may impact the market positioning of amusement operations.

Between 2000 and 2010, the U.S. Hispanic population grew by 43 percent, to a total of 50.5m people. The non-Hispanic population only grew by five percent, reaching 258m. Further examination reveals that within that number, the white population increased by just one percent to 196.8m.

But the largest increase was in the Asian demographics, which grew faster than any other – by 43.3 percent – and now stands at 14.7m. Census officials claim that the growth has a lot to do with immigration rates among Hispanics and Asians.

Overall, the U.S. population increased by 9.7 percent in since 2000, and is now 308.7m. Operators should take note that the census data also reveals that the south and west accounted for 84.4 percent of the nation’s growth, and the ten most populous states now contain over half the U.S. population. Approximately a quarter of all Americans live in California, Texas and New York.

Companies operating in those regions may have huge opportunities, but may also face marketing challenges. Games and vending items could be produced and vended to reflect these population shifts, with more ethnically-targeted merchandise into the machines.

By law, the federal census is taken every ten years.
