More raids in Alabama
Published:  13 May, 2011

The quiet did not last long in Alabama. Only two months after Robert Bentley was sworn in as the new governor in January, trouble resurfaced on the bingo front.

After succeeding former governor Bob Riley, Bentley disbanded Riley’s task force of armed state troopers who had shut down bingo halls statewide. Bentley stated that he wanted a court decision on the matter.

When Luther Strange, the new attorney general, compelled the state’s remaining bingo resorts to ship their machines out of Alabama, they complied to avoid raids and confiscation. They hoped for a positive court verdict that would allow the return of the machines.

In late March, after a circuit court judge ruled for the bingo operators and locations, two venues in one city opened. However, a week later, sheriff’s deputies raided both sites. Strange explained that Bentley still prefers court action over police action, but also insisted that they would continue to enforce current state gambling laws.

One of Alabama’s largest bingo operators, Country Crossing, claims to be working with manufacturers to develop a machine that complies with all state gambling laws. Company executives anticipate that they will resume bingo operations later this year.
