Over 300 attended the European Eight-Ball Pool Championships in Malta at the fabulous Dolmen Hotel, to compete for the right to be crowned Champions of Europe plus a share of the €13,000 prize monies.
This was the fourth visit of the championships to Malta, which is a favourite with the players and their families, thanks to first-class facilities and the warm welcome of the people of the island.
Not only are the players and people of Malta enthusiastic about the game of eight-ball, but there was also a welcoming speech from the member of parliament responsible for sport, Clide Puli, at the opening ceremony of the championships.
With 11 titles to play for, the programme was designed to keep the pool players interested but also to give time for their supporters to watch the play and enjoy the social side of the championships, which has become a major part of the event.
In the team championships, Wales took the Men’s A trophy, with England winning the Men’s B and Junior titles. All Ireland took the Ladies’ Team award while the Over-50s and Under-21s titles also went to Team England.
Clayton Attard of Malta (pictured) was crowned Men’s Individual Champion, with former World Champion Emma Cunningham taking the Ladies’ title back to Ireland. Frank Costello won the Junior event, with Bill Rigby of England taking the Over-50s Individual title; both are from England. The wheelchair trophy was won by Andy Rigby of Wales.
In 2012 the championships will be held in either Ireland or Spain, and new members from Eastern European countries are being considered as hosts for 2013, before the event is hosted once again in 2014 by Vincent Degiorgio and the members of the Malta Pool Association.
