The world’s finest eight-ball pool players gathered in Blackpool for the finals of the Barcelo Hotels & Resorts World Eight-Ball Pool Federation world championships, organised by the English Pool Association. Almost 1000 competitors entered, including a strong contingent from Australia, challenging for honours in a variety of events including the men’s and women’s individual and team championships. Also present was last year’s leading lady, Sue Thompson (pictured).
“Our world championships grow more competitive each year and now attract players from around the world,” said organiser George Harwood. “As we return to Blackpool for the 12th time, a dozen countries are competing and they include the world’s top 64 ladies and all the front-line contenders in the men’s game.”
The English Pool Association has again attracted the support of the game’s leading suppliers, including billiard-cloth manufacturer Milliken/Strachan and Heywood, the maker of tables. Both companies are long-term supporters and have backed the world championships since they started 19 years ago.
