Could ATMs and kiosk-type ticket vending machines be partially responsible for the 9.1 percent unemployment rate plaguing the U.S.? President Barack Obama seems to think so. During a television interview on 13 June, the journalist asked Obama why he could not convince corporate America to hire more employees, despite record profits.
The president again reminded the viewers that the U.S. economy was growing after what he called “the worst crisis since the Great Depression”. He then added: “There are some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers. You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM, you don’t go to a bank teller, or you go to the airport and you’re using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate. So, all these things have created changes in the economy.”
Those comments caused a great stir among Obama’s critics. They argued that kiosks and ATMs have been around for years already, and that there are jobs related to the development, manufacturing and operating of these machines. Many vending and amusement operators have made some form of this electronic equipment part of their route for many years.
