Shanghai Shanda is the distributor in China for the online game Adventure Island Online, which was examined and approved by the Ministry of Culture and Administration of Press and Publication.

In 2007, Shanda discovered that Le Zhang and Qian Huang had produced a plug-in for Adventure Island Online without authorisation and sold the plug-in for profit, seriously influencing the operation of the game.

The public prosecution of this case was instituted by the People’s Procuratorate of Pudong New Area, Shanghai. Five people – Le Zhang, Qian Huang, Wen-yu Liang, Xiao-xia Ruan and Yang Liu – were sentenced to penalties including five years’ imprisonment and substantial fines.

This case is one of 15 major infringement and piracy cases in the first phase since the five Ministries and Commissions commenced investigation in 2010, and has become the key precedent for procuratorial organisations in Shanghai for handling intellectual-property right cases.
